Local kids get dental care for free
BATON ROUGE - In honor of National Children's Dental Health Month, East Baton Rouge Parish Schools partnered with dentists and organizations to bring free dental care to kids.
It's called the "Give Kids a Smile" program, and sponsors include Our Lady of the Lake Children's Hospital, the Greater Baton Rouge Dental Association, Health Centers in Schools and The Louisiana Dental Association. Every Friday in February, select schools throughout the parish will bring students to local dentists to be examined for free.
The total cost of donated services by dentists adds up to nearly $50,000.
"Either they don't have the resources or their parents having trouble bringing them to the dentist...so I think it's important for us to stay involved to make sure children receive the care that they deserve," said Dr. Johnnie Hunt, a pediatric dentist in Baton Rouge.
Schools get selected for the special services based on their location to participating dentists and based on how big the need is for students.
