PIERRE PART- Hundreds of people gathered here Tuesday, to pay respects to those who lost their lives in the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre.

The Pierre Part Middle School parking lot was transformed into a glowing candlelight vigil. People knelt and said prayers for the kids and teachers who were shot and killed Friday in Newtown, Connecticut.

Even youngsters, who many would think were too young to understand what happened, paid respects.

"Some kids and teachers lost their lives because a man had shoot them," said Conner Boudreaux, a 3rd grader.
Wanda Templet is the principal at Pierre Part Middle School. She and other administrators helped organized the vigil because they felt a special connection with Sandy Hook Elementary.

'"We have a school just like theirs, very much like theirs. Our colors are even the same," she said.

After the shootings, Pierre Part schools are taking extra procedures to make sure students are safe.

"We have done drills, we have doors that lock now, and we have police presence on our campus. We've done as much as we can to keep our kids safe," said Templet.

But whatever is done, parents remember this tragedy.

"As a mom, I just wondered if it was here, I just couldn't imagine seeing that. Especially the teachers who put themselves in the way to protect the children," said Boudreaux.

The Pierre Part schools are selling spirit shirts that read, "My heart belongs to the green and white." Money raised will go to Sandy Hook Elementary School.
