WALKER- Our Lady of the Lake opened the first emergency room in Livingston Parish today, something it says will help save lives.
"We felt there was a strong need to put something here to provide emergency care as opposed to them having to drive all the way to Essen Lane on the main campus," said Dr. Shammi Kataria with OLOL.
People in Livingston Parish are happy to have emergency care located so close to home.
"From a boating viewpoint, I think it's gonna be very helpful, in this parish here, we have a lot of elderly people, like myself, so it will mean a lot to them to get to a hospital very quickly," said Joel Louque, who lives near the Diversion Canal.
The hope is to get people in the parish to emergency care faster.
"We want to provide easier access to care, and so in a trauma patient we have the golden hour that we talk about," said Dr. Kataria, "We can stop gap it, bring them over here, resuscitate them, and stop that injury process as best as we can and then get them to the main campus."
The facility will also feature lab and imaging services as well as a pharmacy.
