Livingston Parish school expanding cafeteria, classrooms
DENHAM SPRINGS - Bids opened Thursday on the expansion of an elementary school in Livingston Parish.
Southside Elementary School in Denham Springs will get an additional building on its campus that will bring in a new cafeteria and five new classrooms. The school's current cafeteria will be transformed into classrooms as well.
"They'll be excited to have their space," said teacher Dee Langlois. "They'll be able to go into one part of the room and get on the floor and spread out and not have kids stepping over them and tripping over them. I think for the kids ultimately it's going to be exciting. It's going to feel like it's their space."
With the number of students expanding every year school leaders feel it's time to make room for more students.
"It's important to be proactive when you see the numbers growing so that you can prepare for the future and have those classrooms available when the need arises to be able to hire additional teachers," said Principal Laura Williams.
Construction on the school's expansion should begin this summer and finish toward the end of next school year.
