LIVINGSTON - School employees showed up in force at Thursday's school board meeting to demand better pay.

"We've been making the same amount since 2003," said bus driver Senetta Aime. With nearly thirty years on the job, she said her full retirement benefits will be just over $1000 a month.

Many of the employees believe there's undue waste in the school system which could be redirected to their pay.

"When we drive these extra routes and don't get paid but they're docking drivers, that money goes somewhere," said Aime.

Sympathetic board members proposed an independent audit of the school system Thursday to find the employees more money. Early estimates have it costing up to $10,000.

"I think it will pay for itself and hopefully save us money," said board member Kellee Hennessy-Dickerson who first proposed the audit.

Employees who are paid on a month to month basis are hoping to get an additional paycheck for the year or a permanent pay increase.

The proposal passed even though some members who voted yes said they had reservations. Board member James Richardson said he was skeptical the audit will find enough money for employees' pay.
