Livingston Parish jail causing major budget concerns
LIVINGSTON - Costs to operate the Livingston Parish Jail are draining the parish budget, and could plunge it into debt by the end of 2012 if corrections aren't made.
Director of Finance Jennifer Meyers says there is no immediate threat of layoffs or a reduction in parish services. She says all cost cutting measures will be considered first.
According to Meyers, jail costs are a common problem in many parishes. She says taxes collected are not meeting all of the jail needs.
State law requires the parish to pay for jail operations. That includes things like clothing, food and medical care for inmates. The sheriff's office is responsible for supplying personnel to run the facility.
