BATON ROUGE-- A 16-year-old 8th grader was arrested at Westdale Middle School early Thursday for bringing a loaded .25 caliber handgun to school.
Family members of rapper Torrence Hatch, known as Lil' Boosie, tell News 2 the 16-year-old is related to Boosie, who is serving time on drug charges and also facing murder charges.
Deputies say an anonymous tip led to the 16-year-old's arrest. They collected his book bag, where they say the boy stashed the gun. You can see "Hatch" written clearly on the front of the bookbag, the same last name Boosie shares.
The 16-year-old is now also facing simple robbery charges. Baton Rouge Police said the 16-year-old robbed someone on Eaton Street on August 28.
The dangerous combination of violence and weapons has parents worried.
"It coulda went off accidentally, the child coulda been playing with it when it went off that way-- there could have been numerous things that could've happened," parent Yolanda Little said. She's confident in her two kids' safety when they go to school at Westdale, but this has her shaken.
"The first thought is-- Oh my God! What could possibly be going through his head to bring a gun to school?" Little said.
Investigators and school system spokespeople told News 2 they do not know why the 16-year-old brought the weapon to school, but were quick to say they need help keeping other guns out.
"You have to remember on the first day of school, we hand out pencils, paper and notepads. We don't hand out weapons," East Baton Rouge Parish School Spokesperson Chris Trahan told News 2. "The community really needs to help up prevent this from coming onto the campus."
The 16-year-old faces expulsion for a year. Trahan expects him to be sent to Valley Park, but after a year, he can return to EBR schools.
