NEW ROADS - It's pecan season in Louisiana and in Pointe Coupee Parish, one of the state's busiest pecan manufacturers is busy.

Bergeron Pecan Company in New Roads grows its own pecans and processes nuts from other pecan growers throughout Louisiana. Typically the company process between 6 to 7 million pounds of pecans a year.

This year the family plans to only process about 5 million pounds of pecans because of heavy rain this spring.

"Last year we had a big crop. In the spring... we had a lot of rain and it affected the pollination of the crop, and it's affecting the production," said Andre Bergeron.

About 20 million pecans are harvested statewide, generating about $12 million for the state economy.
