Legislation could require photo ID for card users

BATON ROUGE - You could be required to show a photo ID every time you use your debit or credit card if new legislation passes at the State Capitol.

Rep. Regina Barrow, D-Baton Rouge, sponsored the bill to protect people in Louisiana from fraud.  Right now, merchants are only required to ask for identification if a card company specifies it's needed.

That has led to folks attempting to defraud places like Reginelli's on West Chimes Street, especially with call-in orders. Manager Steven Castay said right now, if someone is inside the restaurant, he doesn't ask for ID.

"We just swipe the card, trusting that's the person's card and they're gonna sign for it," Castay said.  He does require to see the card if someone calls an order in.

Some frequent eaters at Reginelli's call the possible requirement an inconvenience, but most News 2 spoke with aren't averse to the idea.

"I think it's a pretty good idea-- it's gonna be a little bit more of a hassle to deal with it, but it's gonna protect you in th end from getting your information stolen," Janalyn Shively said.

Discussion on the bill slated for Monday was deferred voluntarily by Barrow so changes could be made.  Barrow's office said she hopes to have the bill back on the calendar within a few weeks.
