Lefty leads through 54
ARDMORE, Pa. (AP) - Phil Mickelson has posted a record five runner-up finishes at the U.S. Open without winning the second Major of the year. He's put himself in position to end that drought.
Phil Mickelson carded three birdies on the back nine to close an even-par 70 that keeps him 1-under through three rounds at Merion Golf Club. Lefty went ahead with a birdie on 17 and stayed on top with a hard-fought bogey on 18, a hole that none of the 73 players in the field birdied on Saturday.
Hunter Mahan (MAY'-han), Charl Schwartzel and Steve Stricker are one shot back and one ahead of Justin Rose, Luke Donald and Billy Horschel.
Tiger Woods has played himself out of contention. He's 10 shots back following a 76, matching his worst U.S. Open round as a pro.
