Lawmakers talk about higher ed cuts, roads
House Speaker Jim Tucker, (R)-Terrytown, says Louisiana funds higher education well above the southern regional average. He says that's not the problem.
He claims tuition at state universities is well below other southern states. The Legislature currently has control over tuition hikes. Rep. Tucker says he expects legislation to be reviewed this session giving universities more of that power. He wants checks to make sure the hikes aren't too extreme, possibly making higher education too expensive for many.
State Rep. Hunter Greene, (R) Baton Rouge, says he expects more review of dedicated funds. Many of the funds are protected by the state constitution. That makes them off limits even during tough budget times. Greene says any dedicated funds, except for roads, need to be looked at and possibly eliminated.
