Lawmakers move part of breakaway school district forward
BATON ROUGE- The Louisiana House of Representatives approved one of the proposed laws needed to establish a breakaway school district in the southeast part of East Baton Rouge Parish.
A similar measure failed to pass the House last year.
Next, a second proposed law will have to be approved. It's a constitutional amendment and is expected to be debated Monday.
If lawmakers approve the package, it must be voted on in a state-wide ballot before the new school district could be formed.
Supporters have said the district will be similar to independent districts of Zachary, Central, and Baker. It would cover the area of Baton Rouge between Interstates 10 and 12.
