BATON ROUGE- State Representative Sherman Mack, R- Livingston, says the Louisiana DOTD needs to begin examining plans to widen Highway 190 east of Baton Rouge.

He will ask the state for a study on the project tomorrow during a Louisiana House Transportation Committee meeting. Mack says an exact dollar amount is needed to determine a plan to pay for the work.

Business leaders along Highway 190 support Mack's efforts. Courtesy Golf Cars Sales Manager Tracy McAndrew says the highway becomes a parking lot when Interstate 12 gets shut down for an accident. McAndrew lives four miles from her shop. During the last shut down it took her four hours to get to work.

She says the route should be widened because it is often the only detour for a major traffic problem.

Music Store owner Jody Mayeux has similar problems in Walker. Mayeux says much of his business involves music lessons. Most people cancel when traffic becomes an issue. He says a nearby dentist tells him about the same type of scheduling problems.

Work is ongoing to widen I-12 from O'Neal to Walker. Mayeux says it will help, but Highway 190 should also be improved to keep up with the growth and traffic.
