Law enforcement honored for heroic efforts
BATON ROUGE - Today is a day of honor and remembrance for Louisiana State Troopers, to remember those who have fallen, a memorial was held for troopers who gave their lives in the line of duty.
The name of each fallen trooper was read aloud during a memorial service today at the State Police Memorial Wall. More than 100 officers from various statewide law enforcement agencies, first responders and civilians were also honored for their extraordinary efforts during the past year.
Emergency Services Command Technician Taylor Moss and and his team was honored for their performance of duty. Their response, exceeded normal expectations when a tanker, carrying a highly flammable substance was involved in an accident on I-10.
The wreck snarled traffic for an entire day, and those who responded brought the situation to a safe solution.
"There was a point in time, where we were down to doing something that we've never done before on an interstate," said Moss. "This was the worst possible scenario."
Moss and his team responded to the call early Aug. 22. He said as soon as he got there, he knew something was wrong. The truck's axle was broken and its tank was leaking highly-flammable isobutane onto the roadway. Moving the truck off the interstate was not an option.
"The impact destroyed every option we had," he said.
Officers evacuated the area and Moss and his team, along with other safety crews, executed a plan to vent and burn and tanker. Crews placed metal plates on the ground, and covered them with a thick layer of dirt. Hazmat crews blew the top off the tanker, releasing pressurized fumes, and lit another charge underneath. It created an explosion of fire, with flames reaching over 100 ft. in the air.
Moss said the mission was successful, and if given an opportunity he wouldn't have done anything differently.
For their efforts, the 30 troopers working on a solution to clear the roadway were recognized and honored for their around-the-clock work.
