Laura Bush gives final grants for Gulf libraries
CHALMETTE - Former First Lady Laura Bush visits Chalmette to announce the recipients of her foundation's final grants to help hurricane-affected school libraries rebuild their collections.
Bush will unveil the 12 recipients of the Laura W. Bush Foundation for America's Libraries during Thursday's event at Chalmette High School, the first school she visited after Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005.
More than $500,000 in grants will be given to 12 schools across the Gulf Coast as part of her foundation's Gulf Coast School Library Recovery initiative.
To date, the Foundation has granted $14.1 million to all 50 states, including $6.3 million to rebuild Gulf Coast school libraries.
