BATON ROUGE - As John Dilworth leaves as the East Baton Rouge Parish School Superintendent, his temporary replacement Carlos Sam has his hands full.
Over the next few months, Sam will work with the current administration to tackle the looming budget deficit the school system faces.
"Ultimately we're going to try to protect the integrity of the classrooms as we go through this budget crisis, and I will make recommendations to the board and they will ultimately decide what we should or should not do," Sam said.
Right now staff is coming up with a deficit number that must be cut, but the decisions for change aren't Sam's and his hands are tied.
"My role is to be a team player and for myself and my staff to work cohesively with the board. I serve at the pleasure of the board. I'm the only employee they have at this time, and I will serve in the role until they make any other formal decision," Sam said.
There's no time frame on when the school board will find a suitable replacement for the position.
