NEW ORLEANS - The Corps of Engineers announced that they will close the last open bay at the Morganza Spillway by the end of the day.
The spillway has been open since May 14 to relieve flooding along the Mississippi River. After river levels dropped the Corps closed all but one bay in order to let water finish draining out of the forebay.
The Corps said they actually had six bays open today to speed up the forebay draining, and should have them all closed by 4:30 p.m.
Once the bays are shut the Corps will do inspections of the flood control structure to assess any damage from the water.
