ST. FRANCISVILLE - Barry S. Edge will serve life in prison for the murder of an Angola prison guard almost 14 years ago after a jury deadlocked on whether to sentence him to death.
The 53-year-old was found guilty Saturday of first-degree murder in the death of Capt. David C. Knapps during a botched escape attempt at Angola in 1999.
The jury was unable to come to a unanimous decision Monday on whether to recommend the death penalty, which is required by law. Their vote for the death penalty was 9-3.
Edge is the last of five inmates, known as the Angola 5, to stand trial in the death of Knapps during the failed escape attempt.
