Lane closure planned on 'New Bridge' this weekend
BATON ROUGE - The westbound, outside land of the I-10 Mississippi River Bridge will be closed this weekend for a routine bridge inspection.
The closures will begin at 6 a.m. and end at 1 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday.
"This bridge is in good shape, but we need to inspect it every two years to find out what's changed from two years ago," said Bridge Maintenance Engineer David Miller.
The Department of Transportation and Development says it needs to stay on top of these checks. In April, an audit found issues with the routines of bridge inspectors and reported that 14 percent of bridges in Louisiana are structurally deficient. DOTD says this year it's doing a much better job.
"[During] any inspection, they're looking for defects," Miller said. "A lot of this bridge is steel so you're looking for rust, cracks; anything that could be considered a deficiency."
In the event of rain this weekend, DOTD will have to reschedule the inspection. It's too dangerous for workers to inspect the bridge in the rain. That reschedule date has not been determined but DOTD says it attempts to give a one-week notice of any lane closures.
