Landlord charged with theft of housing funds
NEW ORLEANS- A former landlord from Metairie has been charged with illegally receiving housing subsidies.
Federal prosecutors say the Jefferson Parish housing Authority assigned 71-year-old Jefferson Thompson a tenant whose rent was federally subsidized. A contract barred him from receiving any other government funds to pay for the tenant's rent, but Thompson allegedly secured funds from the Federal Emergency Management Agency in addition to the money paid by the housing authority.
A court filing claims Thompson illegally received nearly $14,000.
He is charged with theft of government funds which carries a maximum sentence of ten years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
