Land near L'Auberge part of annexation request
BATON ROUGE- The first step to possibly annex the L'Auberge Hotel and Casino into the City of Baton Rouge is underway. All of this centers around the incorporation effort of the City of St. George.
Landowners on one side of the casino filed a petition to annex nearly 630 acres of their property into the city limits. The land in question is north of the casino sandwiched between River Road and Nicholson Drive.
East Baton Rouge Parish Tax Assessor Brian Wilson said before L'Auberge could be annexed, other properties must join the City of Baton Rouge first.
"You've got several other properties that sit between Louisiana Riverboat and L'Auberge," Wilson said. "So, those properties would also have to be annexed in to get to L'Auberge."
The owners of a sprawling 600 acre parcel of property filed a petition for annexation into Baton Rouge recently. It would need approval from the Metro Council.
St. George spokesperson Lionel Rainey called the annexation request another attempt to derail the movement. He said it was "a purposeful attempt to annex property to get to a revenue center," but claimed it would not negatively affect the proposed city's budget.
This week, the City of Baton Rouge challenged former state representative Woody Jenkins annexation lawsuit which questions the Metro Council's approval to extend the city limits to the Mall of Louisiana and some land across from it. As that battle ends up in court, the land near L'Auberge could be the next controversial annexation.
A spokeswoman for L'Auberge said their position hasn't changed. They are continuing to study the possible impact the St. George movement could have on the casino.
