NAPOLEONVILLE - Neighbors of a Napoleonville woman who owns more than 20 dogs said they're fed up, and want some of the canines gone.

Virgie Gauthe says she knows her 24 dogs can be a bit much, and that it's a problem.

"I have too many dogs, and I'll tell anybody that," she says. "If one gets ill and they die, I die a little bit with them, because I'm attached to all of them."

Neighbors said they've been trying to get something done for years.

"I can understand if you got two dogs. I can understand that, but she has so many I couldn't even count them. It's over 20 dogs. That's too many dogs at one house," said Carolyn Chevies.

Neighbors say the dogs stink up the neighborhood and bark all the time.

"I mean when you do go to sleep it's time to get up, and if you try to lay down during the daytime they still bark," said Juanita Jupiter.

"They're always barking. It's just a problem, you know. You can smell it. They have flies all around," Frank Couteau.

Gauthe disagrees. She says the dogs stay quiet for most of the day unless neighbors provoke them by throwing rocks or kicking the fence.

"If people are smelling things I don't know what they're smelling, because I clean the poop up. I bury the poop in the back," she said.

Napoleonville passed an ordinance that states that people can't own more than two dogs, but because Gauthe owned her dogs before the law was passed they're grandfathered in.

She may not be breaking any laws, but neighbors still want the dogs gone.

"The law is not what's of question here," said Alderman Renard Southall. "Those dogs have come under every aspect of the description of the word nuisance to the community."

Gauthe says she's working with Rescue.Me Animal Welfare to find new homes for the dogs. If you would like to help find one of the dogs a home contact Rescue.Me Animal Welfare.
