BATON ROUGE - More than four in 10 unemployment checks in Louisiana were issued improperly because they failed to meet the state's own standards. That's according to a federal report issued last week.

The U.S. Labor Department identified over $497 million in unemployment "overpayments" from 2009 to 2011, a rate of 43.6 percent, which is the highest in the country.

The figures were released as part of a White House effort to reduce government fraud, waste and abuse. Louisiana is one of six states identified as "high priority" by the Labor Department that will get additional technical assistance.

Curt Eysink, the executive director of the Louisiana Workforce Commission, tells The Times-Picayune the figures are skewed and that his agency has made great strides to reduce its error rate.
