La. school board suspends single-sex classes
LAFAYETTE - A Louisiana school board has agreed to temporarily end single-sex classes at a middle school, resolving a lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union.
Thursday's settlement calls for the Vermilion Parish School Board to suspend single-sex classes at Rene A. Rost Middle School through at least the 2016-2017 school year.
The ACLU claims the Kaplan school illegally segregated male and female students. School officials said the program was designed to improve students' behavior and academic performance.
Schools Superintendent Randy Schexnayder denies the school board buckled under pressure from the ACLU. He said the program was halted because an insufficient number of parents wanted their children to participate.
Schexnayder added that the program could be revived in the coming years.
