La. optometrists to perform surgeries
BATON ROUGE- Gov. Bobby Jindal signed a bill into law today that will allow optometrists with no medical school certification to perform eye surgeries.
Many ophthalmologists, medical doctors who are certified to perform surgery, are against the new law. They argued optometrists are not trained enough to perform operations.
However, optometrists will only be able to perform procedures they are trained for.
Jindal says the bill will allow citizens to have more access to eye care.
