A convicted felon has been charged with lying to the FBI about a police shooting that killed two people and wounded four others on a New Orleans bridge in Hurricane Katrina's aftermath.

Federal prosecutors said Thursday that 45-year-old David Ryder, of Opelousas, falsely claimed that he had chased a group of people near the Danziger Bridge before one of the people fired a gun at him.

Police officers shot and killed two people and wounded four others on the bridge less than a week after the August 2005 storm. Two former New Orleans police officers have pleaded guilty to helping cover up the fact that police shot unarmed civilians.

Prosecutors said Ryder has never been a law-enforcement officer but was carrying a gun and wearing a law-enforcement T-shirt on the day of the shootings.
