La. joins NRA, other states in gun sales petition
BATON ROUGE - Louisiana Attorney General Buddy Caldwell signed on with 21 other state attorneys general to an NRA petition asking the Supreme Court to overturn a ban against handgun sales to people younger than 21.
The petition to overturn the ban was filed in August and notes a 2008 ruling allows those younger than 21 to carry handguns in self-defense, which they claim contradicts the ban.
An earlier appeals court ruling against the NRA noted it's not illegal for people younger than 21 to buy other guns like rifles and shotguns, or to possess handguns and be given them as gifts.
Other states which have signed on to the petition include: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Utah, West Virginia and Wisconsin.
News 2's Troy Gaulden will have more on this petition tonight.
