BATON ROUGE- The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services gives Louisiana a $3.5 million performance bonus for "significant progress in enrolling uninsured children in Medicaid."

State Medicaid director Don Gregory tells The Advocate that Louisiana didn't expand eligibility - it did a better job of enrolling eligible children.

Gregory says Louisiana counted 684,723 children enrolled in its program as of Dec. 2. The federal agency says Louisiana got the bonus for increasing enrollment 5 percent. It says the state signed up about 36,857 children last year.

Gregory says getting early health care prevents crises, and helps children do better in school.
