La. gamblers lost more than $219 million in January
BATON ROUGE - Gamblers lost more than $219.9 million at Louisiana's 20 major gambling venues in January, 16.7 percent better than the nearly $188.5 million the gambling halls won the year before.
State police figures show January's numbers were helped by the opening of Golden Nugget Lake Charles in December.
The Golden Nugget helped make Lake Charles the largest casino market in the state, with more than $78.2 million in winnings.
Winnings at Baton Rouge's three riverboat casinos rose in January, going up by 8.6 percent from what they brought in during January 2014.
Winnings in the New Orleans casino market were up by 2.5 percent in January when compared with the year before.
The Shreveport market showed a nearly 2 percent increase over last January's winnings.
