BATON ROUGE - When shots rang out at a Connecticut school, killing kids and teachers, emotions rippled throughout the country.

In Louisiana, the Fusion Center at State Police Headquarters is on alert.

"You had a huge number of lives that were lost. It was senseless," said State Police Superintendent Mike Edmonson. "We grieve for those families. But law enforcement getting there so quickly was paramount to no one else getting hurt."

When a crime happens in Louisiana, the people at the Fusion Center gather intelligence in real time.

"On a daily basis we are monitoring different databases, different departments and agencies on the national level and the state level," said Edmonson.

After the Connecticut shooting, the Fusion Center started reviewing incidents from around the country and discussing best response strategies with sheriffs and police chiefs across the state. The goal is to make sure Louisiana is ready for the unknown.

"At the end of the day the public could care less about the color of your uniform or the shape of your badge. They just want to know that you are working together that you're sharing information," Edmonson said.
