La. Family Forum touts abortion success

BATON ROUGE - With nearly forty bills signed into law with their backing, the pro-life group, The Louisiana Family Forum, took today to celebrate their legislative success. They said the biggest accomplishment was a bill that puts further restrictions on abortions in the state.

Those in favor of pro-choice weren't so quick to celebrate. They said that soon, large swaths of land in the South will have no accommodations for women seeking abortions.

"We're here to advocate for bills that protect Louisiana against legislative threats to faith and family," said Rick Edmunds with Louisiana Family Forum. "Here's 37-38 bills that we were able to weigh in on and we feel like these were great wins."

Their big focus was a bill authored by Monroe Representative Katrina Jackson (D), and signed into law by governor Jindal, that forces abortion doctors to have admitting privileges at a hospital within 30 miles of the abortion clinic.

<"I'm 100 percent pro-life," Edmunds said. "I am so thankful for life and what it means to me."

The sole abortion clinic in Baton Rouge, Delta Clinic, is now facing an uncertain future, in danger of closing later this summer. Delta Clinic refused to comment on this story.

Planned Parenthood said the law restricts women's access to safe healthcare.

In a statement they said "abortion has over a 99 percent safety record," and "this law could cause some of Louisiana's five remaining health centers, providing safe and legal abortion, to close their doors."

Right now the only clinic that would meet the new requirements for abortion is a clinic in Shreveport.
