BATON ROUGE - Louisiana residents may have to use passports to board commercial airplanes instead of state-issued identification cards after Jan. 15.

Louisiana is one of many states not in compliance with the federal Real ID Act of 2005, which mandates more provisions in obtaining an ID and updated security features on each card.

In 2008, state lawmakers passed legislation prohibiting the Office Of Motor Vehicles from implementing the federal law, but by October the OMV will have added 37 of 39 federal requirements. The two others were specifically omitted by the state law.

Since the federal law took effect, Homeland Security has granted Louisiana and many other states extensions to implement the mandated changes. The most recent expires in January, and it could be up to the Transportation Security Administration to enforce and deny delinquent identification cards.

State officials are optimistic Homeland Security will grant another extension.
