HOUMA, La. - Child support debts cost gamblers in Louisiana casinos more than $806,000 of their winnings last year.

Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services Secretary Suzy Sonnier tells The Courier that non-custodial parents around Louisiana owe more than $1.2 billion in child support.

If gamblers win more than $1,200, casinos run their names through a database to see if they owe child support.

Hollywood Casino in Baton Rouge seized $106,771 - more than any other state-regulated casino.

The "casino interception" law was signed in 2010. Other states with similar laws include Mississippi, Indiana, New Jersey, New Mexico, Colorado and West Virginia.
