BATON ROUGE – Attorney General Jeff Landry announced that the Louisiana Department of Justice will be looking into the case of a woman arrested for "whipping" her children after they burglarized a home.

Schaquana Spears was arrested on child cruelty charges. According to arrest reports, Spears' 13-year-old child was struck by Spears with an RCA cord multiple times. The boy has cuts on both arms and across his body, while the other two boys age 10 and 12, both had injuries as well, according to arrest reports.

Spears was bonded out of jail on a $2,500 bond after a Good Samaritan saw her story and helped. Since, Spears has had a massive response of support from those who have heard her story in Louisiana and across the nation.

Spears told WBRZ that she was trying to discipline her children and teach them that what they did was wrong.

"Single mothers especially that are raising sons, we have to have discipline or we will lose them," Spears told WBRZ Thursday.

Spears said she was not upset at the deputies who arrested her or the state, as they "were doing their job."

Landry said that the state's Department of Justice is looking into the case.
"Because the State faces potential liability related to Schaquana Evita Spears, I am involving the Louisiana Department of Justice in this matter, Landry said.

Landry said that Spears' attorneys will be contacted along with the Department of Children and Family Services.

We will be contacting Ms. Spears' attorneys and requesting a meeting in our office to hear their version of the events that took place on June 17, 2016. Additionally, we will be contacting the Department of Children and Family Services to verify Ms. Spears' children were removed from her custody and, if so, their justification for such action," Landry said.

Landry also added that it is important to discipline children.

"To be a peaceful and moral society, it is imperative our children learn right from wrong," Landry said.

"I am grateful for my loving mother who did not spare the rod to teach this valuable lesson," he said.
