L'Auberge asks for annexation into Baton Rouge
BATON ROUGE - The L'Auberge Casino and a group of landowners near its property submitted a petition this week to be annexed into Baton Rouge.
It's another blow to efforts to incorporate the southern portion of East Baton Rouge Parish into its own city, the city of St. George.
The annexation petition includes nearly 1,200 square acres which stretch down Nicholson Road to the casino's property. The law requires annexations to be contiguous with the city's border, and earlier this summer annexation requests were submitted for 630 acres between River Road and Nicholson Drive.
If approved, the annexation would put the casino's property taxes out of reach of the proposed city of St. George's budget. A spokesperson for the movement said previously that annexing the casino into Baton Rouge would not negatively affect their budget.
Organizers of the St. George movement said last week they've gathered more than the minimum number of signatures needed to place a petition to incporate up for a vote, but they're pushing to get 20,000 total signatures in case any are disqualified.
