Kenilworth park to get shaded playground
BATON ROUGE - The BREC park at Kenilworth is getting some extra shade for the playground.
The Lauren Savoy Olinde Foundation is funding a "The Sun Shades" project to provide shade covers at different parks throughout the city. They're partnering with BREC to complete the project.
Leaders of the foundation say they want the shade covers to protect kids from the sun and also to bring awareness to skin cancer.
"Blistering sunburns in a child's life can increase their chances of skin cancer by 50 percent. And that's really important for all families and all children to know that they need to protect their skin early," said Sarah Lomax, who is one of the foundation's founders.
The cost of the project is $40,000 and they hope to put other shade covers up at other parks.
The official unveiling of the playground will be at the beginning of September.
