ST. MARTINVILLE - A tracking dog used by the St. Martin Parish Sheriff's Office has died from heat stroke after chasing down two escaped juveniles.
A spokesperson for the sheriff's office said the dog, K-9 Hatos, died Saturday shortly after locating two juveniles who escaped from the St. Martin Parish Juvenile Detention Center.
The two juveniles had scaled razor wire fences and fled into a heavily-wooded area around 10 a.m. Saturday. They were located by Hatos around noon, and both had been injured during their escape attempt.
K-9 Hatos had been serving in the sheriff's office for a year before he died.
