A justice of the peace who refused to marry an interracial couple resigned on Tuesday.
Keith Bardwell refused to marry Terence McKay and Beth Humphrey in Tangipahoa last month because he feared their children would suffer criticism.
Bardwell's lawyers advised him to step down because he would be taken to court and he would lose.
The couple's lawyer filed a federal suit against Bardwell in response to his decision, claiming he violated equal protection guaranteed by the 14th Amendment.
Baton Rouge NAACP President Lamont Cole was one of many calling for Bardwell's resignation over the incident. He told News Two he hopes this resignation helps to remove the black eye Bardwell placed on the state.
