Jury to deliberate in Katrina shootings trial
NEW ORLEANS- A federal jury is set to begin deliberating in the trial of five current or former police officers charged in deadly shootings on a New Orleans bridge after Hurricane Katrina.
Jurors will begin their deliberations Wednesday after U.S. District Judge Kurt Engelhardt reads them instructions on the law and the charges in the case.
The jury heard nearly seven hours of closing arguments Tuesday by prosecutors and defense attorneys.
Police shot six people, killing two, on the Danziger Bridge less than a week after the 2005 storm.
Prosecutors said officers shot unarmed people with no justification before they embarked on a cover-up that included fabricated witnesses, falsified reports and a planted gun.
Defense attorneys said police reasonably believed their lives were in danger when they opened fire.
