Detroit-area porch shooting case goes to jury
DETROIT - A jury has gone home without a verdict after deliberating for about three hours in the trial of a Detroit-area man who killed an unarmed woman on his porch last fall.
The jury heard closing arguments earlier Wednesday. Theodore Wafer is charged with second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of 19-year-old Renisha McBride.
She showed up drunk on his Dearborn Heights porch before dawn on Nov. 2. Several hours earlier, she had crashed her car into a parked car blocks away.
The 55-year-old Wafer says he shot McBride through a screen door in self-defense after hearing severe pounding outside his home. Prosecutors say there was no justification.
The jury asked for the clips that held the screen, but the judge said no because they weren't admitted as evidence.
