Judge rules for fired Port Allen financial officer
PORT ALLEN - A judge ruled today that Port Allen's mayor had no authority to fire the city's chief financial officer, and ordered she give her job back.
Judge Alvin Batiste said Audrey McCain was a department head, so Mayor "Deedy" Slaughter could not have fired her.
Slaughter said she terminated McCain after clerical errors turned up on the city's financial audit. McCain was only CFO for a portion of the audit, and city council members said she was hired to fix problems left by her predecessor.
The firing also happened a week after a News 2 investigation obtained financial records showing Slaughter billed taxpayers $2,400 for her trip to the president's inauguration in Washington, D.C. They also showed she increased her pay by $20,000 even though the council voted the year before to reduce the Mayor's salary.
Today Judge Batiste told the mayor she could not interfere with McCain's work, and had to provide her access to a computer and office.
Chris Nakamoto was at the hearing and will have reaction to the ruling tonight on News 2.
