Judge denies injunctions in EBR School Board suit

BATON ROUGE - A judge denied a series of injunctions Friday in a lawsuit filed to stop the East Baton Rouge School Board's decision to reduce the number of members on its board.

Judge Tim Kelley denied motions from the NAACP's Baton Rouge chapter, who sued the district over opposition to the changes.

The NAACP claims in their suit that the reapportionment hurt African Americans in the district more than whites, and that the board didn't properly notify the public about meetings where the issue was discussed. They also questioned the validity of board member Craig Freeman's vote, saying because he had a home in another state his votes should not be counted.

The school board voted on July 24 to reduce the number of seats from 11 to 9. Supporters of the measure said reducing the number of members could help reduce friction at meetings that was holding up progress on several issues.

The current divisions include six majority white and five majority black districts, while the new divisions will have five majority white and four majority black districts.
