BELLE CHASSE - The oath-of-enlistment room of a New Orleans area naval station is being dedicated to chef John Besh, a former Marine who served during Operation Desert Storm.
Besh owns seven New Orleans restaurants, including The American Sector at the National World War II Museum, but started his career in the military. He joined the Marine Corps Reserve after high school and spent 10 months in the Middle East in the early 1990s.
Besh was an infantry corporal in the company that took control of Kuwait International Airport during the four-day ground war in February 1991. He was a forward observer, calling in targets for air, mortar and artillery strikes.
The dedication ceremony was planned for Thursday at the Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base in the suburb of Belle Chasse.
