Job loss slows in Louisiana

Louisiana lost 21,900 jobs from December to January, according to a report Friday from the Louisiana Workforce Commission.

The lost jobs were largely due to Christmas jobs in retail sales and shipping and temporary student jobs coming to a seasonal end.

With seasonal factors taken out, the state gained 2,800 jobs in January.

From January 2009 through January 2010, the state lost 42,200 jobs - on a non-seasonally adjusted basis. That's an improvement from the 2009 count of 47,100 lost jobs.

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for January rose slightly from 7.3 percent in December to 7.4 percent in December. State officials said the number of people working or looking for work increased by a little more than 6,000.
