Job fair gives vets fresh start
BATON ROUGE - Hundreds of veterans and active duty military attended a job fair at the Baton Rouge River Center today. Hiring Our Heroes is a national event aimed at helping veterans and active duty military transition into the workforce.
Over 55 employers attended the event, looking for vets of all ranks and levels of experience to fill open positions. Veterans say this is a great way to transition into civilian life.
"The biggest thing they need when they come home is an opportunity," said U.S. Marine Veteran Anthony Moore. "I think the biggest challenge is probably taking that massive experience and putting it into lamens terms. But there's almost nothing that you're not able to really do."
Accion employer Mel Robertson says he's looking to hire two people after today's event.
"We thought this was a great opportunity to help our veterans, certainly gain, gainful employment," said Roberston.
The event is sponsored by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the Baton Rouge Area Chamber, the Louisiana Workforce Commission, the Department of Labor Veterans' Employment & Training Service and other local partners.
