BATON ROUGE - Governor Bobby Jindal signed a new law Thursday intended to stop the practice of "revenge porn."

HB 489 by Rep. Julie Stokes (R-Kenner) makes it illegal for people to send out or post pictures of people exposing themselves without permission from the person in the photo. Jindal said it was "shocking" to hear how many people had been bullied or harassed by the practice in Louisiana.

Under the law, anyone who shares such a picture without permission could face a two-year prison sentence and a $10,000 fine.

Louisiana already has a law against sending nude images of people younger than 17. Stokes said the new law was needed to cover adults, and to offer criminal penalties for cases where someone gave permission to have the picture taken under the assumption it would stay private.
