BATON ROUGE - Governor Jindal signed off on a proclamation designating September 19th the national POW/MIA recognition day after one local man stepped up to help make sure those that have served are not forgotten.

March 28th 1969 is the day Ashton Belcher will never forget.

"To this day, I can still see the two guys," said Belcher. "I don't know the ranks but reading the letter and daddy bowing his head then I had to take them to where my mother worked and that was even worst compared to my daddy."

It's the day his brother went missing while serving as a fighter pilot during the Vietnam War leaving him and his family with no answers.

"He had only been over there for six months he was on his 97th mission he was due to come home but never made it that 100 mission was it but he never made it," said Belcher. "He was off course why we'll never know."

Since then Belcher joined the National League of Families of American prisoners and Missing in Southeast Asia that handle missing prisoners of war and as of Wednesday he was able to convince Governor Jindal to designate September 19th as the National POW/MIA Recognition day in Louisiana.

"It's to honor the ones that never came," said Belcher. "Their still may be some over their that we're not aware of, but mainly that nobody that never got anything back."

More then 1,600 American soldiers are listed as missing or unaccounted for from the Vietnam War and 24 of them are from Louisiana.

"People tend to think that this is a lost issue, but it cant it can never be a lost issue we have to remember these guys because they sit the presence for the wars that going on now and for everybody returning," said Belcher.
