Jindal calls for eliminating 25 boards, commissions

BATON ROUGE - Governor Bobby Jindal's office released a list of 25 state boards and commissions he's asking state lawmakers to eliminate.

Jindal's office said the groups were either inactive, fulfilled their original mission or could be absorbed into existing boards and commissions.

Jindal also proposed legislation to create an automatic sunset provision on commissions and boards which don't report certain financial information to the Legislative Auditor each year.

Here's a full list of the proposed eliminations and the governor's explanations for doing so:

Bio-Fuel Panel
Reason to Eliminate: This council is inactive.

Academic Advisory Council
Reason to Eliminate: This council is inactive.

Uniform Grading Scale Task Force
Reason to Eliminate: This council is inactive.

Postsecondary Education Information Technology Council
Reason to Eliminate: This council is inactive and the State Chief Information Officer reported that its functions are unnecessary.

Commission on Addictive Disorders
Reason to Eliminate: The functions of this commission can be integrated into the consolidated Behavioral Health Planning Council as a standing committee specific to addiction issues. This approach is consistent with the integration of block grants for mental health and substance abuse made available by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

Advisory Council on Early Identification of Hearing Impairment in Infants
Reason to Eliminate: This commission's function can be integrated and consolidated into a standing committee of the Louisiana Commission for the Deaf.

Ambulance Standards Committee
Reason to Eliminate: This commission's functions can be integrated into the daily operations of the Health Standards Unit or Bureau of Emergency Management Services of DHH.

Birth Defects Surveillance System Advisory Board
Reason to Eliminate: This commission's functions can be transferred to the Commission on Perinatal Care and Prevention of Infant Mortality.

Emergency Medical Services for Children Advisory Council
Reason to Eliminate: This commission's functions can be integrated into the daily operations of the Bureau of Emergency Management Services of DHH.

Human Services Interagency Council
Reason to Eliminate: This council is inactive and its functions are currently executed by officials at the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals.

Commission on Men's Health and Wellness
Reason to Eliminate: This commission is inactive.

Council on Obesity Prevention and Management
Reason to Eliminate: This commission is inactive and its membership has disbanded. Additionally, its functions are currently executed by the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals Office of Public Health.

Opioid Treatment Program Needs Assessment Task Force
Reason to Eliminate: This commission is inactive.

Prescription Monitoring Program Advisory Council
Reason to Eliminate: This council is inactive and its function is already carried out by the Louisiana Board of Pharmacy.

Environmental Education Commission
Reason to Eliminate: This council is inactive.

Mullet Task Force
Reason to Eliminate: This council is inactive.

Reptile and Amphibian Task Force
Reason to Eliminate: This council is inactive.

Sustainable Local Food Policy Council
