HARVEY - Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office confirms an officer shot multiple times Wednesday afternoon in Harvey, La has died.

The sheriff's deputy shot to death on a busy suburban New Orleans street has been identified as 51-year-old David F. Michel Jr.

Jefferson Parish Sheriff's spokesman Col. John Fortunato said a suspect in the Wednesday afternoon shooting is in custody. Fortunato says the suspect is at University Medical Center in New Orleans, being treated for minor injuries. Fortunato says the suspect is believed to have been hurt in a struggle with Michel prior to the shooting.

Michel died at that same hospital. Fortunato said the shooting happened in the suburban area of Harvey after Michel stopped the suspect, who was walking along busy Manhattan Boulevard around 12:20 p.m.

Fortunato says witnesses told investigators the suspect pulled a gun from his waistband during a struggle with Michel. Michel was shot several times.

According to Col. John Fortunato with JPSO, the officer of the Street Crimes Unit was attempting to initiate a 'pedestrian stop.'

Fortunato explained that the role of officers in the Street Crimes Unit is to drive around high crime areas and make either pedestrian or vehicle 'stops.'

"The particular objective is to go into these high crime areas and pick and choose who they are going to stop and either alert 911 or take other actions," Fortunado said. "But at his time, we don't have the details about what prompted this stop."

Michel was transported to University Medical Center and treated for injuries.

Reports of an 'officer down' came in around 12:25 p.m. near Manhattan and Lapalco Boulevards.

According to a store clerk at the Dunkin Donuts, 2301 Manhattan Boulevard, an officer was shot near the store.

The clerk told WWL-TV the shooting happened "right outside the door." The clerk also said the store was not robbed.
