Jail eating hole in Livingston Parish budget
LIVINGSTON - Costs at the new Livingston Parish jail are digging the parish into a budget hole to the tune of more than a million dollars each year, according to the parish administrator.
Layton Ricks told News 2 jail operating costs are covered by the parish, while the sheriff's office supplies manpower. When the new jail was built a few years ago it was projected that bringing in more state and federal prisoners, along with the money to house them, would offset the operation costs.
Ricks said the reality is the revenue from housing those prisoners isn't anywhere near covering those costs, and the jail is creating a widening budget gap.
News 2's Mike Steele is in Livingston Parish today to find out what could be done to correct the problem, and what it could mean for taxpayers and parish employees.
